PYD militants shut down headquarters of rival Kurdish and Assyrian parties

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The Democratic Union Party (PYD) continues its campaign closing the offices of parties and organizations that oppose it in the areas under its control in northern Syria. The PYD also announced that there would be no gatherings to celebrate the Nowruz festival that takes place annually on March 21.

Kurdish sources said the PYD closed the offices of the Democratic Progressive Kurdish Party in Syria in the city of Amuda and its conference hall in al-Qamishli city on Sunday. The PYD also closed two headquarters for the Assyrian Democratic Association in the cities of al-Qamishli and al-Malakiyah.

Speaking to Zaman al-Wasl, Mohammad Farhan, a member of the General Coordination of the Movement for Kurdish Reform-Syria, said that patrols subordinate to the PYD shut down the Movement’s headquarter in al-Qamishli.

The PYD’s campaign aims to shut down all the party and organizational offices that are part of the Kurdish National Council.

Farhan stated that the party members would not demand a license, and they will continue their political work as before as their houses are their offices.

Farhan indicated that the main Kurdish National Council office in al-Qamishli and 15 local offices in several areas were closed in recent days in addition to the PYD shutting down the offices of parties affiliated with the Kurdish National Council. He insisted that they will continue with their efforts, “To gain the rights of the Kurdish people in Syria, and these actions only make us more insistent on achieving our aims.”

The Kurdish National Council released a statement saying that the PYD is increasing its tyrannical and oppressive practices against the council in the service of external agendas. It said the PYD is using the events in Sanjar as an excuse to kidnap dozens of Kurdish National Council activists and supporters, storm the Council’s headquarters, ransack them, destroy them and set fire to some of them, and some PYD supporters insulted the Kurdish flag and ethnic symbols.

The Kurdish National Council statement also said the PYD is imposing high taxes on citizens, it has confiscated some citizens’ possession, it is promoting ignorance by imposing its curriculums in schools and kidnapping young men and minors to serve in its military forces. To all these, the PYD has added terrorizing other parties by closing the Council and its party’s offices. The statement concluded warning of an internal Kurdish struggle.

The Asayish forces, the security wing of the PYD, banned citizens from holding celebrations, gatherings, firing in the air, launching fireworks, or lighting bonfires on the Nowruz festival on March 21. The forces also banned anyone from using motorcycles in the city between March 19-23, 2017.

In less than one week, the Asayish forces closed around 50 headquarters belonging to Kurdish and Assyrian political parties and organizations subordinate to the Kurdish National Council in most of the areas under PYD control. This campaign began following confrontations between the Syrian Peshmerga forces and Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) forces in Iraq in an area close to the Syrian border at the beginning of March 2017.
