    Fatih Neighborhood, Little Syria

(Zaman Al Wasl TV)- Fatih is an Istanbul neighborhood of the Constantinian peninsula bordered on the north by the Golden Horn and the Marmara Sea on the south. It extends west to the wall of Constantinople (Theodosian Wall). So then what is the face of Damascus doing here.

In this neighborhood, on the European side of Istanbul, visitors can eat Damascene Shawrma, buy bay lead soap from Aleppo, and the strange herbs from the herbalists. It is possible to find Turks reluctantly trying Damascene falafel, and buying products in shops covered with Arabic signs. So you begin to wonder, who is hosting whom in this neighborhood?

The neighborhood, extending from Yenikapi by the sea to Eminonu with its mosques and markets, exhales the bustling of tourists and inhales a Damascene scent. Fatih neighborhood has become a destination even for Syrians living in other parts of Istanbul. They purchase Syrian goods, they eat Syrian foods, and they meet with their relatives, friends and fellow countrymen.

This neighborhood was once a center for Istanbul’s Jewish population, and now it is host to thousands of Syrians who have come to the city and are making their lives there. They have turned Fatih into a small Syria that has features like Damascus, the flavor of Aleppo, and the atmosphere of a Homs neighborhood.

Zaman al-Wasl TV turned to document the features of this small Syria, the activities of its inhabitants and their lives in this small video.
