(Zaman Al Wasl)- Sources reported that Syrian National Coalition has started issuing and renewing passports for Syrians living in Turkey, including defected soldiers and officers, beside youth who escaped the compulsory military service and others.
Sources mentioned to Zaman al-Wasl that passports issued by the NC is recognized by 56 countries with cost of $.230 for regular passports which take about a month to issue, while the cost is $.430 for the urgent ones which only need 4 days, while passports' renewal cost $.100.
The accredited office for passports’ issuing is situated in Istanbul in Turkey besides another one in Rihaniyeh near the Turkish-Syrian boarders where big number of Syrians are there, according to sources.
Applicants should attend in person or be presented by the father, with identity card or any official documents to confirm applicants details.
On the other hand, Syrian regime has announced that renewing and issuing passports have become available in its embassies.
Zaman al-Wasl met many Syrian people in Lebanon and Egypt who applied for renewing passports in regime's Embassies, that they did not received receipts of the money they had paid as fees, besides the long period (almost a year) they have been waiting to get the passports. All that increased Syrians fears of possible deception and using their needs to generate more money.
Others see regime’s initiative to re-open the process of renewing and issuing passports after cease for 4 years, as an attempt to prevent the National Coalition from sorting out this problem after its intensive effort to be able to issue passports, therefore the regime will keep the profit it receives from passports’ fees.
Despite all suspicion among Syrians, especially refugees, thousands of them queued in front of Syrian embassies in Cairo and Beirut.
A well informed source confirmed to Zaman al-Wasl that almost 20 thousand Syrians applied for passports in 3 days.
Many people reported to Zaman al-Wasl that Lebanese authorities took a chance as Syrians’ rush to the Embassy to arrest young men under claims of illegal entry to the country.
The issue of renewing Syrian Passports, especially for opposition figures abroad has been under spotlight for a while, as many attempts took place by the National Coalition and its Embassy in Qatar to grant the legitimately to renew passport, but all were unsuccessful.
