'Abortion protected me of rape': former prisoner

Hoda, a-23- year-old woman from Baba Amr neighborhood in the central city Homs told Zaman al-Wasl about her two-month torture memos in detention where she lost her pregnancy due to systematic torture by Syrian security.

“I am Hoda” she introduced herself then her voice disappeared because of the memories if her terrible experience had suddenly come back.

Hoda explained that she was forced to leave Baba Amr after the annoyance she received from the security forces as they wanted to know where he sister was. Her sister was an activist in Baba Amr coordinate. Hoda moved to live in Yarmouk Camp for Palestinian refugees but she was not lucky and get arrested while she was walking with her child in street.

“The security members arrested me and pulled me to take me to the security branch, while my son was holding me strongly, crying with fear in his eyes and trying to prevent the security forces from taking me away.”

Hoda detailed that the soon she arrived to the Palestine security branch, the investigator hit her and throw her on floor although she was a-5-month pregnant, then she was sent to the branch prison. “I was shocked from the women’s appearance, they were covered with marks of torture, even there were many children aged less than 14 years with us.”

Hoda said that she refused to tell the investigators about her sister’s place, therefore they used to hang her from hands for long time, and torture her with electricity and beat her. “They tried to rape me, but when I bled they left me, but other girls, especially young and virgins were raped and we heard theirs shouts and pain.”

Hoda detailed that she bled a lot in prison when she was having an abortion, but the guard refused to transfer to hospital or even to listen to her and ordered her to shut up, till a prisoner who was a doctor helped her to get the fetus out.

“The story of my abortion was a joke among investigators and guards, as they kept sarcastically saying that the revolution has lost a terrorist, but I thank god for the abortion as it saved me from rape” she added.

Hoda was released 2 months later, to find out that her father died of his pain for her prison, then she moved to Turkey with her family.

Hoda explained to Zaman al-Wasl the inhuman conditions of her place of living in Istanbul, as it used to be damp and wet of sewage besides being cold all the time. Moreover, they find nothing to eat apart from some bread and onion.

Hoda’s tragedy has not stopped here, as she requested help from many aid and relief organizations, but she was blackmailed from one while another refused to help her because she was new in Turkey.

Hoda can talk Turkish and now she is looking for a job to help her husband in the cost of living and to treat her son.
