Bus crashes in Egypt kill 23, injure 17 others

Officials say two separate road accidents in Egypt Sunday have killed 23 Egyptians and injured 17 others.

Husam Gamil, director of emergency services for the Red Sea governorate, says one accident occurred when a passenger bus flipped over near the resort city of Hurghada, killing 11 people and injuring 11 others.

Maj. Gen. Mohammad Ismail, a local security director, said 12 people were killed and another six injured when their minibus collided with a truck carrying construction materials near Wadi Natrun, some 125 kilometers (78 miles) northwest of Cairo.

Deadly road accidents claim thousands of lives in Egypt every year. They are mostly caused by speeding, bad roads or lack of regular vehicle maintenance. Road accidents killed some 14,400 people in Egypt last year.
