Pages: First Arabic library opens in Istanbul

The Syrian community in Istanbul celebrated on Friday the opening of “Pages”, the first Arabic library in the city which contains wide variety of Arabic, Turkish, English and French books.

Samer al-Qadiri, an artist and one of the library’s founders told Zaman al-Wasl that “pages” would considered like an Arabic education centre where it would provide many educational and artistic workshops, lectures and seminars.

“The library would open Turkish-Syrian channels of communication and it would display many films and a special section for kids”, al-Qadiri detailed.

The founder revealed that “Pages” contains books of different subjects, except books call for violence and extremism or support the Syrian regime.

Al-Qadiri explained the fact that library had not got any support from any party or organisation. He confirmed the aim of the library was not profitable, in the same time it was not charitable, as minimum fees is needed to keep it working and improving.

The artist added that “Pages” aimed to support the Syrian community and support them and protect their identity within the Turkish community.

Al-Qadiri wished that Syrian people would use the services of the library and get committed in reading habit, despite their difficult circumstances.

The artist confirmed that actor Yara Sabri, one of the founder have had huge effect on promoting and introducing the library to the public.

The founders of the library are: actor Yara Sabri, writer and artist Jolanar Hajo, director Maher Salibi, Journalist Alisar Hasan, director Firas Fayad, the Turkish writer Safida BAkso, and Omani Abir Ali.
