Prominent Egyptian Journalist asked Saudis to fund news channel against Shiite: WikiLeaks

Leaked Saudi Arabia's cables revealed that Mostafa Bakri, prominent Egyptian Journalist, had requested funds from Saudi Arabia to establish a news channel, saying it will face the expanding of the Shiite sect.

According to the WikiLeaks document, the Saudi Minister foreign affairs requested from the King of Saudi Arabia to look into a suggestions from Bakri to found a TV channel as a strong voice facing Shiite media and support Saudi Arabia’s position.

the document mentioned that “Ahmed Kattan”, the Ambassador of Saudi Arabia in Cairo, has mentioned that Bakri is very close to the Military council in Egypt and the president Abdulfatah el-Sisi personally.

 WikiLeaks, late on Friday, published more than 60,000 Saudi diplomatic documents to the Internet, a move that echoes its famous release of US State Department cables in 2010, AP reported

The document mentioned that Bakri had informed president “Sisi” about the attempts of the Iranians to contact him and other media people to influence them and gain their support, but Bakri confirmed that Egyptians would not cooperate with Iranians, but the matter needs urgent intervention with support of Saudi Arabia.

Al-Faisal, Minister of Foreign Affair quoted the Ambassador's opinion in Bakri as a member in the Egyptian Parliament and have wide popularity among people and he ghad given a speech in the Parliament supporting the Egyptian-Saudi relations.

In the end of the document, the Minister of Foreign affairs suggested arranging a meeting for Bakri with the Minister of Culture and Information in Saudi Arabia to discuss Bakri’s requests for issuing a daily newspaper and a TV channel to face the Shiite media.

Founding a channel against Shiite is considered very strange for Bakri to request, because of his attitude toward The strange part of Bakri’s request, because he used to support Hezbollah and frequent guest on al-Manar TV Channel, and was the director of its office in Cairo with his brother. He kept describing Hezbollah as a struggle organization despite the crimes it committed in Syria.
