Greece has offered to suspend its planned referendum on its bailout terms if negotiations with the EU are reopened, Malta's Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said Tuesday, the Times of Malta reported.
The daily's website cited Prime Minister Joseph Muscat as telling parliament that the Greek offer was subject to conditions and that he was not sure if it was a breakthrough or a ploy by Athens to gain more time.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has scheduled the referendum for Sunday and urged voters to massively reject the bailout terms offered by the EU which require Athens to make further cuts to spending and increase sales tax.
The stand-off between Greece and its creditors has spooked global equity markets and created fears of a deeper crisis if the country ends up defaulting and being forced out of the euro.
