23 people killed in barrel bomb attack on al-Bab town near Aleppo

A Syrian regime airstrike on the northern Syrian town of al-Bab near Aleppo killed at least 23 people, including 3 children and 3 women, and wounded dozens on Saturday, the Syrian Network for Human Rights said as a barrel bomb pounded a crowded local market.

Activists said the deadly attack on al-Bab is the second in four days where 15 people, including 6 children,  had been killed when barrel bomb stormed Ibad al-Rahman mosque on Wednesday minutes before the Maghrib Prayer where people were preparing their daily breakfast for Ramadan, the holy month where Muslims fast from dawn to sunset.

Regime's barrel bomb attacks have also targeted the village of Rasem al-Hermel in the eastern countryside and two barrel attacks hit the neighboring distric of Kuwaires military airport, activists said.

Aleppo city is divided between the Syria military, backed by militia, and a range of insurgent groups including al Qaeda's Nusra Front, Islamist brigades and Western-backed rebels.

Meanwhile, at least 230,000 people have been killed in Syria's conflict; more than double the figure documented a year ago and probably still an under-estimate, according to the United Nations.
