Electricity, water, become luxury in Yarmouk Refugee Camp

(By Soufyan Jbawi; Translation by Yusra Ahmed)

Abo Ahmed and his children patiently wait for the time to become 8:00pm, because it is the time for the electricity to get connected to their house in Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus.

Abo Ahmed then rushes to everything needs charging and switches on the TV and the fan to enjoy the “luxury” of electricity for few hours.

He enjoys the electricity for 4 hours a day at cost of 300 Syria pounds each day for one AMP current enables him to switch the TV and a fan and lighting the sitting room.

Ayman, an owner of an electricity generator works by diesel said that he had 25 participants in Jaoneh neighbourhood in Yarmouk, he charges each one 300 Syrian pounds per day for one AMP electricity current.

He added that he was forced to disconnect the current for some participants because they were not able to pay the fees, and he justified that by the high cost of maintenance and providing parts and diesel for the generator.

Abo marwan told his different suffering, as he does not have stable income and he only relies on the support and aid of the relief and charity institutions. “I cannot afford to pay for electricity, I started to forget that invention, I prefer to bring food to my children with those 300 Syrian pound instead of paying them for electricity.”

Abo Marwan mentioned that he was worried about the outcomes of the United Nations decision to reduce the support for people in yarmouk camp, and he found the decision too unfair because most of people in Yarmouk camp do not find any source of income apart from the aid they receive, as they use some and sell the rest to provide some money for spending.

With the hot summer, the suffering and spending of people increased as they find ice cubes the only solution to reduce the annoying feeling of hot weather, and the cost of a one-kg bag of ice cubes reached to 250 Syrian pounds.

Abo Ahmed spends monthly about 15 thousand Syrian pounds for 4 hours electricity current added to the price of ice cubes. He expressed his gratitude for the good life he lives in compared to other around him because he can afford for such luxury like electricity and cold water.
