Assad air strikes on market in rebel-held Aleppo kill at least 30 people

Syrian regime warplanes attacked a busy market in a rebel-held neighborhood of northern city of Aleppo, killing at least 30 people and wounding more than 60, activists said.

The deadly strike on the market in al-Shaar neighborhood on Monday occurred during the rush hours before Eid al-Adha that comes by Thursday when people are out shopping.

Also, 4 people had lost their lives in al-Shaar in regime air strikes Sunday, the Syrian Network for Human Rights.

At least 17 civilians, including nine children and three women, were killed on Sunday when rebels shelled a regime-controlled neighborhood of al-Midan, once a center for the city's thriving Armenian community in the northern city of Aleppo.

Aleppo, once the commercial center of Syria, has been divided since 2012, with government forces controlling much of western Aleppo and rebel groups in control of the east.

activists say the Syrian military frequently uses helicopters to drop crude barrel bombs -giant canisters packed with hundreds of pounds of explosives and scrap metal - on rebel-held towns and neighborhoods.

Bashar al-Assad has denied that barrel bombs are used by the military.
Syria's conflict began in March 2011 as popular protests against four decades of Assad family rule but changed into armed insurgency under a security force crackdown.

More than 250,000 people have lost their lives in the 4-1/2 year war in Syria.
