Fly Agaric , Amanita muscaria and other poisonous kinds of mushrooms have become a new killer for Syrians, as it caused death for many Syrian refugees in Germany and Sweden as many refugees died as a result of eating these plants thinking it was wild mushroom, according to activists.
Activist Sulaiman al-Abdullah, a resident in Germany mentioned to Zaman al-Wasl that a 16-year- old Syrian teenager died in the University hospital in Monster city after eating that plant with his mother, which led liver failure, then died later.
Al-Abdullah added that teenager’s mother and other four people were still under treatment but passed the critical status. He mentioned that the cause of death of the teenager was liver failure and he was not lucky to receive a liver transplant on time.
The activist mentioned that dozens were affected after eating amanita muscaria, the most poisonous mushroom in Germany, as Syrians thought it was the same kind they used to eat in Syria. It was reported that 35 cases of poisoning resulted from eating that plants were admitted in a Hospital in Hamburg, most of them were Syrians.
On the other hand the centre of poison control in Sweden warned of the possibility for the new arrivals of Syrian refugees to country to get poisoned of the deadly mushroom after reporting many cases in Germany last week.
Swedish News Agency reported that 30 cases of poisoning were diagnosed after eating the poisonous mushroom.
Doctor Anna Landgren, from the poison control centre explained that many types of edible mushroom in Asian countries are similar to those types of mushrooms that are toxic in Europe.
The doctor added that refugees eat mushrooms regardless of their safety because of the hunger during their long journey to reach to Europe.
Amanita muscaria, commonly known as the fly agaric or fly amanita, it is a kind of Mashroom, but poisonous. Although classified as poisonous, reports of human deaths resulting from its ingestion are extremely rare after parboiling and cooking which weakens its toxicity and breaks down the mushroom's poisonous and psychoactive substances.
