Assad's air strikes kill 17 in Al Bab town near Aleppo

At least 17 people on Monday were killed when Syrian regime warplanes targeted a marketplace in an ISIS-held town near the northern city of Aleppo, activists told Zaman Al Wasl.

The deadly aerial campaign on al-Bab town left 17 people killed and dozens wounded, a few days since 120 people had been killed in double air strikes by Russian and Syrian fighter jets on the town that controlled by the Islamic State group.

Meanwhile, the Russian defence ministry said its jets struck 10 ISIS targets on Monday, as Moscow ramped up its aerial campaign with bombardments that for the first time targeted the Damascus area.

Earlier on Monday, the Russian defence ministry said its jets had struck nine IS sites in Syria over the past 24 hours, hitting command centres, weapon caches, artillery and communication posts in the Syrian provinces of Homs, Idlib and Latakia, AFP reported.

Syrian army has frequently used helicopters to drop crude barrel bombs - giant canisters packed with hundreds of pounds of explosives and scrap metal - on rebel-held towns and neighborhoods.

More than 250,000 people have lost their lives in the 4-1/2 year war in Syria.
