Syrian rebels thwarts regime attack on northern Hama

Syrian rebel groups led by dominant Ahrar al-Sham movement on Wednesday have thwarted regime's major ground attack on the northern countryside of Hama province, destroying at least 25 army vehicles and tanks, activists and rebel commanders said.

The Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia took part in the fighting, according to Reuters source who is familiar with the military situation in Syria.

Backed by U.S.-made Tow missiles, the key rebel group of Ahrar al-Sham was able to paralyze regime army attack on northern Hama near the villages of al-Lataminah and Mourk, activists said as about 25 armored vehicles and tanks have been completely destroyed.

Along with the regime attack, the hotspot countryside has been occurred to an intense wave of Russian air strikes that also hit nearby areas in the neighboring province of Idlib on Wednesday, Reuters and activists said.

Russia, a top ally of Bashar al-Assad, started carrying out air strikes in Syria last week saying they were targeting hardline Islamic State militants.

But fighters on the ground and Western countries have said the Russian campaign is mainly focusing on other rebel groups and is aimed at shoring up Assad rather than combating Islamic State.

Russia's Wednesday strikes targeted the towns of Kafr Zita, Kafr Nabudah, al-Sayyad and the village of al-Lataminah in Hama province and the towns of Khan Shaykhun and Alhbit in Idlib, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

6 civilians have been killed in Ma'rret Misreeen in Idlib, the Syrian Network for Human Rights said.

In northern Aleppo, Zaman Al Wasl reported said 3 civilians, two children and a woman, killed and dozens wounded in Russian air strikes on Darret Ezzah.

Most of Idlib province is held by the Army of Conquest, or Fateh Army, an alliance that includes al Qaeda's Syria wing Nusra Front and other Islamist factions and that has put pressure on the Syrian military.

Syria's conflict began in March 2011 as popular protests against four decades of Assad family rule but changed into armed insurgency under a security force crackdown.

More than 230,000 people killed and over 12 million forced to flee their homes.
