Syrian rebels on Friday have recaptured ground in the underway fighting in rural southern Aleppo as regime troops and their Iranian militia, backed by Russian jets  expand a counter-offensive with support from Moscow's two-week-old air campaign.

Syrian Revolution Co-ordinations said rebels have taken back tank battalion base and villages of Abtin, al Muhaira, al Sabiqiya and al Kassarat  that were captured by regime forces early Friday.

Also, rebels had hit one army tank with a U.S.-made TOW anti-tank missile in Jebel Azzan,
about 12 km (8 miles) south of Aleppo city.

Rami Abdulrahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told Reuters there were heavy clashes near the Jebel Azzan region, , control of which is divided between government forces and rebels.

Zaman al Wasl reporter said Russian air strikes hit the a field hospital in al- Hadher town, leaving huge losses. Unknown number of casualties reported in the the attack.

Dr. Abdul Aziz, refused to give his last name, said Russia has deliberately rocked the hospital to paralyze any treatment efforts as rebel-held areas witness the fiercest assault ever.

The area the army and Russian jets were targeting was close to a main road heading south towards the capital Damascus, Abdulrahman said.

Since Russia launched air strikes on Sept. 30 in support of Bashar al-Assad, the army has waged offensives against insurgent-held regions in western Syria, including a rebel pocket north of Homs and areas of Hama, Idlib and Latakia provinces taken by the rebels over the summer. (With Reuters)
