Rebels kill 15 troops in northern Homs, regime kidnaps 20 women

Militants loyal to Bashar al-Assad in northern rural Homs have kidnapped 20 women to press on rebels freeing corpses of regime soldiers who were killed in the ongoing clashes, activists said Thursday.

Rebels said 15 regime army soldiers have been killed yesterday and 7 tanks and vehicles were completely destroyed, showing a remarkable resistance despite the three-week offensive.

The regime and Russian warplanes have carried out more than 40 raids in the northern countryside on Thursday, local activists said. The aerial campaign keep focusing on Talbiseh and Teir Malla towns, they added.

The Assad troops backed by fighters from Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah have launched a series of ground offensives western and northwestern Syria since Russia began air strikes in the country on Sept. 30.

The northern countryside has occurred to severe aerial campaign, more than 370 people have been killed in Russian air strikes, monitoring groups said, mostly from Homs.

Speaking a day after Assad made a surprise visit to Moscow for talks with Putin -- underlining Moscow's new role as a central player in Syria's conflict -- Putin said the two men had talked about the need for a political solution.
