Fireplace for Syrian refugees is not a luxury

Translation by Yusra Ahmed

(Zaman Al Wasl)- As winter gets harder, the picture is not complete without a fireplace. But for Syrian refugees, the fireplace is more than a source for warming; it turns up to become the cooker, bathroom heater, clothes' drier, and an oven to bake bread.

“the moment I turn on the fireplace, I put the kettle to make tea for breakfast for children, then I put the water bucket to heat water for washing and dish-washing, then i put the saucepan to cook food or I use it to roast potatoes, and many times I use it to dry wet clothes” Om Hussein Bozan, a refugee from the al-Qusayr countryside told Zaman Al Wasl. She adds that she tries to use the benefits of the fireplace as much as she can to save the price of gas and fuel.

The latest use of the fireplace is for baking bread to save the price of bread, which might reach to $100 a month, and most of the time it is not affordable for many families, while a big bag of flour can cost $25.

Om Rashid Ghaoui, a refugee from Qara town explained the way of preparing dough and bread, as she mixes flour with water and add salt and yeast, and leave it for a two hours to rest, then she cut it into small pieces and flatten them to follow with baking them on the fireplace.

Om Rashid mentions that the bread she makes is not as good as the ready-made, but still it can save lot of money i can use it for other expenses.
