About 9000 Syrian refugee children in Egypt dropout of school, community head says - Interveiw

(Zaman Al Wasl- Eqtsad)- The representative of the Syrian community in Egypt said in a statement to Eqtsad that about 8 to 9 thousands of Syrian children had dropped out of school, especially basic education stage.

"The Syrian community in Egypt do not have enough financial resources or funding, we are just a party representing the Syrians and trying to represent Syrians in front of the Egyptian government agencies and international organizations, our essential role is helping Syrian people and sort out their public affairs”, Rasim al-Atassi, the representative said.

Al-Atassi added that the Syrian community as a social organization will not be able to fund or finance, as they are only volunteers work to show Syrians’ suffering to the Egyptian government. He explained that they do not know all Syrians in Egypt but they try to understand their problem and transfer them to the concerned authorities in Egypt. To do so, he explained that they had held several meetings with businessmen trying to reach to an agreement with them.”

"Syrian children are our future as they are known of their cleverness and creativity. Spending few millions of dollars now to save our children will reflect on the entire world in future by saving billions of dollars to counter extremism and crimes those children might get involved in” al-Atassi suggested.



The Syrian community representative explained that they suffer of the geographic widespread of the Syrian community, and explained how they try to communicate with all Syrians via their offices in the major area of Cairo city and other provinces. For example they were able to participate in many vaccination campaigns and almost 90% of children have received the measles vaccination

In regard to teaching and education, al-Atassi said: "There are 41 thousand Syrian student in Egyptian public schools and 17 thousand students in universities as well, it is estimated that about 9 thousand children dropped out of school, as a result of difficulties to secure fund to cover costs of education or finding a source of income for their families.

"Our goal is to enable children to get their education and teaching, therefore, we communicate with the Ministry of Education overcome some difficulties especially official documents. In regard to opening Syrian schools in Egypt we contacted the Minister of Education to find a solutions and to grant licenses to open schools, but the Egyptian laws restrict that, therefore we opened educational centers, and they effectively teach the Egyptian curriculum. In Summary, we can say that with the educational file, many problems have been tackle.

Al- Atassi added that they in general coordinate with the United Nations Higher Commissioner for refugees “UNHCR”. In regard to health, they have surpassed many problems and the most important now is that Syrians are treated as Egyptians in the governmental hospitals, moreover, a protocol between UNHCR and the Egyptian Ministry of Health was signed and 64 health centers in Cairo and Giza were determined for free treatment of Syrians.

The Syrian community in Egypt has not been granted a an official license in the Arab Republic of Egypt, it works in cooperation with the Arab Organization for Human Right, it tries to cover the major areas of Cairo and other provinces where there are large numbers of Syrians.
