ISTANBUL (Zaman Al Wasl)- Abir N, a Syrian doctor who used to work individually to treat wounded victims of bombings in Damascus. She was known as the “doctor of Jaramana” that eastern suburb of Damascus, due to her peerless support and dedication to relief work.
She was arrested by regime at a barriers in her area because they found in her car medical equipments, to get charged later of being a member of Islamic terrorist group despite she belongs to the Druze community.
“The interrogator in Palestine intelligence Branch tried different ways in torturing me, he burned body with cigarettes several times in the same place till my skin disappeared completely” Dr. Abir mentioned to Zaman Al Wasl.
The internal Medicine doctor moved around several intelligence branches including Palestine and branch 86. She with other detainees managed to gain sympathy from a recruit who agreed to bring a mobile phone to them inside the detention cell to talk with their families. However, the next day the recruit was called for interrogation because one of the detainees works as informer reported him and he was punished and tortured till death.
“We heard his voice while he was under torture as well as his last gasping before death", Abir said in pain.
After that incident, interrogators and jailers began to follow new methods of torturing including deliberately expose detainees to infection like providing them with dirty blankets and full with scabies and lice and other kinds of germs, which worsened Abir’s wounds and burns a lot and caused her sever inflammation, needed to go to Tishreen military university to get treated.
Abir later was transferred to Adra prison and was charged of belonging to a terrorist group and her confessions were documented.
Abir commented on that saying: “I was astonished to learn about the amount of the confessions attributed to me which made me lose any hope of getting freed.
During detention period, psychological effects began to appear on Abir’s acts as a result of what she went through, and because of her worries on her 11-year old son, Ziad, she became short-tempered and explode with storms of anger once she heard any sound or simple noise. The interrogator tried to blackmail her claiming that her son was detained and he was subject to different kind of torture, he told her horrible description of sort of pain her son was witnessing.
Abir commented on rape cases saying that she witnessed many incidents of rape, but interrogators did not try to rape her because of wounds and burns that cover her body.
Abir was freed by a public amnesty, then she left Damascus and headed to Istanbul, where she lives today.
