SDF, U.S-backed alliance, to fight rebels instead of ISIS at request of Assad: sources

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Well-informed sources said a U.S-backed alliance of Syrian Kurds and Arab rebel groups is preparing to fight Islamist insurgents instead of ISIS at a request of Bashar al-Assad delivered by his key ally Russia.

Sources said Assad's concerns have risen over ISIS defeats by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) which captured a dam on Saturday from ISIS, cutting a main supply route of the militants across the Euphrates.

The president who dominates 20% of the Syrian land has always find in ISIS an unspoken ally where both sides (Assad and the Islamic Sate) have one bitter enemy who is the moderate rebels.

On Tuesday, Russian warplanes have joined U.S. in providing an air cover for SDF fighters but in their new offensive on rebel-held territory in the western and northern countryside of Aleppo province, leaving ISIS-held southern countryside.

Leaked reports early this week revealed that the U.S. had provided an essential information over Syrian armed opposition to Russia which the latter has used in its 3-month-old aerial offensive, leading to death of number of senior rebel commanders.

Sources said we can assume that SDF’s new move is built over Russian and American consensus.

Since the U.S.-backed alliance was formed last October, its fighters have opened several major offensives against ISIS with the ultimate goal of capturing Raqqa. Such a goal has not been lasted.
