Homs: two rebel fighters killed in al-Waer neighborhood in first breach of U.N.-brokered ceasefire

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Two rebel fighters killed Wednesday in al-Waer neighborhood of the central city of Homs, in the first breach of the U.N.-brokered ceasefire reached early December, local activist said.

Hassan al-Asmar, al-Waer-based activist, said Shiite popular committees had opened fire on three rebels claiming they were carrying bombs, leaving two dead.

Footage posted online showed that the slain fighters were in guard duty and no bombs were with them near the sideline between al-Waer and neighboring areas.

On December 10, 300 fighters together with 400 members of their families, left al-Waer, the last rebel-held area of Homs as part of a rare local ceasefire deal negotiated between the opposition and the government.

The fighters and their families were being moved to rebel-held areas of the northwest near the Turkish border.

Homs was long a center of the uprising against  Bashar al-Assad.

The deal comes after a major Syrian army ground offensive to the north of the city backed by Russian air strikes.
