Hekayat Hassan, documentary glorifies Hezbollah Leader, sparks outrage

Translation by Yusra Ahmed

(Zaman Al Wasl)- 'Hekayat Hassan', or Hassan's Story, a documentary aired Saturday by the Saudi-owned Al Arabiya news channel, has sparked outrage in the kingdom and abroad since the 'biography' has glorified Lebanese Hezbollah's leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Activists and well-known Saudi intellectuals have expressed their resentment of the documentary, saying what we've seen is a polishing for Saudi Arabia's bitter enemy and 'fatal lapse' from Al Arabiya.

The documentary started from the hometown of Nasrallah, with his father, who told the reason behind the name, then it mentioned his travel to Najaf to study religion and his return to Lebanon, to join Shiite Amal Movement during the Lebanese civil war, when he became a member in the political council of the movement at the age of 19, to defect later and to join Hezbollah party with support of Iran.

In talking about Nasrallah’s political views and wars of Hezbollah, it looked neutral and slightly biased to show Nasrallah as a charismatic leader, who is very much looked up to, even people cry for seeing him. In this regard, it mentioned Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000, then the assassination of Rafiq al-Harir, to go to July’s war in 2006, and intervention in Syria.

Reaction to the documentary varied, mainly there was dissatisfaction among the Syrian opposition and Saudi viewers, because it showed Nasrallah as exceptional leader and brightened his image, in a time when Saudi Arabia had been trying to draw attention to the terrorist background of Hezbollah after its intervention in Syria and crimes it committed against Syrians.
After broadcasting the documentary about Nasrallah’s Story on Al Arabiya TV, isn’t it the time to review it and cease its work, similar to ceasing aid to the Lebanese army?”, Dr. Mohammed al-Hadif Wondered.

Expert Ahmed bin Rashid bin Saeed explained that the documentary showed the killer of children in Syria as a hero able to win all battles.

Professor of Political Media, Mohammed al-Bishr mentioned that the documentary had no particular national or political message, even it was not professional, all what can be seen throught it is clear hate to Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Turky al-Hamad, the Saudi Intellectual expressed his shock from the documentary because it showed Nasrallah as a charismatic leader who started his political life at young age and then he became a giant who is looked up to.

On social media people expressed their opinion of Al Arabiya TV channel which is funded by Saudi Arabia, is controlled by lobby works on improving the image of Iran and its allies.

In the end, a question come to surface: "was ending the documentary with a boy imitating Hassan Nasrallah's speech aiming to give a sarcastic message from all what mentioned in it about Nasallah? or was it another evidence about the great position of Nasrallah among people and children?
