Syrians celebrate revolution on Friday, refuse federation demands

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Thousands of Syrians across rebel-held areas went to streets for the second week on Friday celebrating the revolution's fifth anniversary as a U.N.-sponsored ceasefire deal enters third week.

The demonstrations in Aleppo, Idlib, Homs and Daraa have called back the memorable peaceful protests in 2011, where freedom slogans were echoing everywhere.

The people have condemned in their signs the partition and federation demands as well they demanded detainees release as well expressed solidarity with besieged towns and neighborhoods.

A new campaign formed by 18 civil and political bodies said on Thursday have pledged to protect the freedom and justice revolt from its enemies.

"Our revolution is ongoing and we have to continue what we began five yeas ago." said in statement.

Last Friday, activists organized 104 demonstrations from over 100 city, town and village in the war-torn country.

The unprecedented U.S.-Russian 'cessation of hostilities' agreement that came into force two weeks ago, has slowed the pace of the war, although it does not include Islamic State militants or the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front.

Meanwhile, opposition said on Friday it would attend peace talks that were set for March 14, but downplayed the chances of reaching agreement with the Syrian regime.

A statement from the High Negotiations Committee said it would focus on the establishment of an interim governing body with full executive powers, and would insist on Syria's territorial integrity.

It also said the Syrian government was preparing a military air and ground escalation in the "coming period", without elaborating.

The United Nations peace mediator on Syria Staffan de Mistura said Syria will hold a presidential election in 18 months.

The starting point for the election will be the latest round of Syria peace talks which are planned for March 14 in Geneva, de Mistura told RIA in an interview.
At least 400,000 people killed, 70,000 wounded and 11 million displaced since revolution erupted on March 2011.
