GAZIANTEP (Eqtsad)- Turkish official figures said the number of Syrian refugees in the border city of Gaziantep has been increased strongly to reach 325,000 people, however the count increases to about half a million people after adding the number of Syrian residents and those who are not included in the temporary protection system.
The small area and population of the city of Gaziantep and limited opportunity of jobs besides other factors, are increasingly pushing Syrian people to leave the city to other Turkish towns seeking jobs.
Economists explained lack of job opportunities in Gaziantep by the competition among Syrians themselves as they almost have similar skills and investments, and have the same target customers.
Another reason has contributed to decreasing chances to find jobs in the city is that the real estate market has reached to the limit after 3 years of activity, which has led to stopping construction, leading to losing jobs of building and construction.
Dr. Abdul Rahman Allaf, Chairman of the Charity Union and Relief organizations, explained that Turkish workers are much more trained than Syrians, therefore, they are more competitive in getting jobs.
Allaf added that many Syrians have lost their investments on the city, leading to losing jobs available for other Syrians. Moreover, he expected that Syrians investors have small chances in success because it is difficult to reach to the Turkish market and customers, as reaching to that market is the criteria for success.
Suhail Eid, added the high rent as a reason pushing Syrians to leave Gaziantep, as rents are much more expensive than bigger cities like Istanbul and Ankara.
