Islam Army kills 15 regime soldiers in Eastern Ghouta

(Zaman Al Wasl)- At least 15 regime army soldiers killed on Saturday in an ambush set by the powerful Islam Army in Eastern Ghouta district near Damascus, group's media accounts said.

Regime forces backed by allied militias waged major offensive on Saturday from four axis to make advances in rebel-held suburbs of Damascus, activists said.

Islam Army posted online photos for slain soldiers said they were killed in the clashes, as well its drones threw leaflets, saying "Damascus will be free (of Assad) soon.. Islam Army is coming."

On Thursday, at least 33 people, mostly women and children, were killed regime air strikes on the Deir al-Asafir district southeast of Damascus, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.

The strikes came despite a month-long "cessation of hostilities" in Syria between regime forces and rebels, excluding Islamic State and al Qaeda's Nusra Front.

The U.S. State Department said it was appalled by the reported air strikes. "We condemn in the strongest terms any such attacks directed at civilians," spokesman John Kirby said.

Parts of the Eastern Ghouta region east of Damascus, where Deir al-Asafir is situated, have been outside Bashar al-Assad's control since almost the start of the uprising which erupted five years ago and descended into civil war.

The area is controlled by different factions, including rebel forces covered by the truce as well as Nusra Front.

The Observatory said Assad forces have been trying to surround Deir al-Asafir, which it said is still home to 2,700 families.

The Syrian Center for Policy Research (SCPR) said at least 400,000 people have been killed since revolution erupted in March 2011.
