Isis kills 40 Kurdish fighters northeastern Syrian: activist

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Fierce fighting erupted between Islamice State and U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the southern countryide of Hasaka province, activists said as the radical group claimed killing 40 Kurdish fighters.

Hasaka-based activist Malaz al-Yousef said clashes took place on two battle fronts, south and west of the al-Shadadi city at the borders of Deir ez-Zor province, and another eastern front opened at the borders with Iraq led to many casualties and injured on both sides.

Al-Yousef said to Zaman al-Wasl, the SDF alliance with international air support is still focusing on the Al-Kharafi motorway that connects the (Al-Hasaka- Deir ez-Zor). They are planning to encircle the village of “Markadeh” from its west, to cut off the road between it and Deir ez-Zor’s northern countryside; however, Isis launched a counter-attack with small groups of fighters from the direction of the villages, Anad and Tell Abu Rasan for the clashes to withdraw to the train station close to the village of Fa’as, west of Al-shadadi area where the military checkpoints there become the target.

The activist indicated that the SDF sought to advance with the train tracks in the direction of the village of al-Soura north of Deir ez-Zor, to facilitate the operation of encircling Markadeh, the last stronghold of Isis in Al-Hassakeh.

The activist implied that the communication networks are cut off in this area, making it more difficult to provide support, especially with the lack of electricity.

Isis announced that as a result of two car bombs attacks on the villages of al-Hamadat and al-Azawaya, south and south west of al-Shadadi city, they killed over 40 of the Kurdish Unit fighters.

The activist Hurat al-Houl told Zaman Al-Wasl of Isis’s car bombs attacks against the PYD and its allies within the SPF between the villages of Oum al-Thabi” and Kharab al-Tahin on the Iraqi border east of “Al-shadidiya”, implying that “no casualties or injuries were confirmed.”

From their side, the PYD, and the major factions in the SPF, said in a press release in Kurdish: “Isis is launching attacks on their locations in the areas surrounding the village of al-Makaman west of Al-Shadadi, from the start of April until yesterday,” indicating that they used heavy weaponry in the attack.

The SPF under the leadership of the PYD, took control on the 7th of March of the village of “Al-Makaman” and it is the first village that is administratively part of Deir ez-Zor province which these forces took over. The area is considered an important transport node given its location at the crossroads connecting al-Hasaka and al-Raqqah with the Ras al-Ayn- Abu Khashab road.

Isis issued a video to introduce the perpetrators of the suicide bomb operations against al-Hajanat Brigade, and the headquarters of the Kurdish Asish militia, and the PYD in al-Hasaka in June 2015, and that lead to the death and injury of several fighters amongst them officers and leaders.

The new release “The suicide bombers, the pride of the nation” begins with a word from the Isis leader, Abu Mousab al-Zarqawi, who is nicknamed the prince of the suicide bombers. It then explains the suicide bombing operation and how it involves one person or more becoming entrenched with an enemy that outnumbers them in numbers and equipment. These operations usually target fortified fences, secured buildings, or aims to kill important enemy leaders. The targets are chosen following prior detailed preparation and meticulous study of the areas surrounding the target and its importance for the enemy.

The visual release mentioned the characteristics of the operation perpetrators, and the most significant of them: “Strong faith in God, good behavior, selflessness, the love of sacrifice for Allah,” according to the report.
The report spoke of the psychological effect of these operations on the enemy, mentioning that they are considered, “A destructive weapon that causes enemies to shake with merely hearing about it, and this is why half the USA army who participated in the war in Iraq have psychological problems and many of them committed suicide after their comrades’ bodies were torn to pieces by the suicide bombers’ and martyrs’ operations.”

The release ended with the words of those executing the attacks prior to its execution, and an invitation to join Isis’s ranks and encourage entrenchment operations which is a method they have adopted recently to cause unrest amongst the enemy ranks. As can be seen following operations they carried out in northern al-Raqqah and south of al-Hasaka in the recent months.

The operation executors are: “Abu Ishaq al-Barket (al-Hasaka), Abu Mahmoud al-Idlibi, Abu al-Kasem al-kheir (Deir ez Zor), Abu Jalbieb al-lathkani.” They are all Syrians and they attacked al-Hajenet barracks in the center of al-Hasaka city. The attack on the militia headquarters was perpetrated by Abu Aysha al-Barket (Al-hassakeh), and Abu Kandet al-Irani carried out the attack on the Kurdish Alasyish headquarters.

Isis control al-Marakadeh, its last stronghold in al-Hasaka province after losing the towns of al-Shadadi” and al-Arishat” to the advantage of the SPF under the leadership of the PYD last February 2016 in attacks that NATO airplanes played an effective role.
