Uncontrolled landfills in besieged areas risk people’s lives, water supply

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian people either in liberated of besieged areas face different kinds of problems and sufferings, they have exceeded the military aspects like shelling, bombing, destroying the infrastructure and houses, to reach to environmental contamination resulted from unsafe and unplanned disposal of rubbish an refuse.

Workers responsible for cleaning in the opposition-controlled areas have no option but to collect rubbish in unorganized makeshift landfills, because most designated landfills are situated in unstable dangerous areas where frequent clashes between the regime and rebels take place.

Activist Thaer al-Homsi lives in besieged Alwaer neighborhood confirmed to Zaman Al Wasl that contamination resulted of rubbish is one of the main problem face people, children in particular, because rubbish is collected in streets and temporary unorganized dumps. Moreover, regime does not let rubbish bags to be removed outside the neighborhood which force people to burn them due to difficulties in burying them.

In similar content, Ramzi Abo Nabout Manager of the Body of Public Services in Daraa said that process is not safe and correct in regard to dumping and relocating rubbish, either ordinary refuse, rubbles, scraps and bombs' residuals.
Abo Nabout detailed: “in liberated areas of Horan, there are many landfills designated by the Body of Public Service in Daraa city and East and West countryside, but they are not well protected and situated near residential areas, which put people under risk of catching disease because of flies and other insects, the problem increases with coming summer and hot weather”.

In Daraya, the problem is more complex according to activist hasan al-Dirani, he explained that there is no general landfill, but each residential collection designates a place for rubbish, fearing of snipers, which put people under risk of disease, which doctors in the field hospital warn about.

Dr. Khalid Abdul Rahman talked to Zaman Al Wasl about the risks of uncontrolled landfills on health and spreading of diseases, as the condition created by collecting rubbish near residential areas increase flies, cockroaches, rats, and sand-flies, all that increase risk of catching intestinal infection like dysentery, cholera, diarrhoea and vomiting which increase risk of death if not treated. Besides, Leishmaniasis, scabies, typhoid and lice.

Dr. Abdul Rahman warns of the risk of contamination of drinking water and groundwater if the infectious and harmful agents penetrate the ground, putting higher number of people at risk.

Many cases of infections because of environmental contamination were reported in Western and Eastern Ghouta like cholera, typhoid, Myiasis and other intestinal infection, many of them led to death.
