Opposition attends Geneva talks to discuss transitional ruling body, nothing else: senior negotiator

Reporting by Hussein al-Zoubi; Translation by Yusra Ahmed

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The chief of opposition's High Negotiations Committee assured that discussing the transitional ruling body with full executive powers and not a participatory government under Bashar al-Assad is the opposition's main reason for attending Geneva talks.

In his statement to Zaman Al Wasl minutes before joining a meeting wih the U.N. Envoy to Syria, Staffan De Mistura, HNC chief Asaad al-Zoubi said that transitional ruling body with full executive powers is the goal of the National Coalition for revolutionary forces and opposition, and that what is going to be concentrated on.

Al-Zoubi mentioned that the meeting would discuss the play of election that regime used to make an excuse to delay talks and arrive late to Geneva.

“the Syrian regime does not want the negotiation to continue, it tried its best to fail it by military escalation it uses before each round of talks, as it yesterday has incited fighting over most fronts ignoring the truce, the regime wants to call off the negotiation via military escalation," he said.

In regard to delaying the entry of humanitarian aid, al-Zoubi mentioned that the U.N. envoy had held the Syrian regime responsibility for that, but still the delay of achieving the humanitarian targets like freeing women, delivering aid and support, breaking siege, are all not included within the negotiation and talks, as there are many countries responsible for executing that.

De Mistura is meeting the Syrian delegation this Wednesday, th official start of the third round of indirect talks, after two weeks of the last round of talks. Delegation of the Syrian regime negotiation is arriving in Friday.

De Mistura had reported to the U.N. the outcomes of his visit ti Tehran via a video conference and declared that the Syrian regime was the side that impedes negotiation.

The first day of third round of talks has coincided with election for Parliament in Syria, however, de. Mistura has declared earlier that th U.N. is looking forward to seeing election where Syrian refugees can participate in, which indicates that he does not recognise this election.

The relaunch of the U.N.-brokered talks, which collapsed in February, has been made possible by a landmark ceasefire between the regime and rebels that began across parts of Syria two weeks ago.

During the previous round of the talks, the HNC delegation arrived in Switzerland nearly 36 hours after the regime's delegation, but waited another two days before heading to the U.N. headquarters.

Both the the regime and the HNC have agreed to participate in the fresh round of indirect negotiations, the latest push by the international community to find a solution to a five-year war that has killed more than 270,000 people.
