At least 11 people, mostly women and children, killed in air strikes on Douma: activists

(Zaman Al Wasl)- At least 11 civilians, mostly women and children, have been killed in Syrian regime air strikes on the embattled city of Douma, northeast the capital, local activist and medics said Saturday.

The sporadic strikes hit city's main market and civil neighborhoods, killing 3 women, 6 children and two men, medics told Zaman al-Wasl.

In the next-door town of Bala, rebels have thwarted regime attack on the Eastern Ghouta suburb. 17 army militants reportedly killed, according to activists.

On Friday, local councils of the Eastern Ghouta warned of a humanitarian crisis as regime forces step up its ground and aerial attacks, calling on International Community to preserve the U.N.-brokered ceasefire deal, according to statement issued Friday.

The statement said at least 2500 families in the southern strip of Ghouta suburbs are facing deteriorating living conditions after three years of severe siege.

The Cessation of Hostilities deal that went into effect on Feb.27 have has brought a gleam of hope dispite more than 2000 violations by the Syrian regime.

The local councils have also called on U.N. aid agencies to provide the urgent aid and medicine to the besieged towns east of Damascus.

Also on Friday, Staffan de Mistura, the U.N. special envoy for Syria, vowed to take fragile peace talks into next week despite a walkout by the main armed opposition, a breakdown in a truce and signs that both sides are gearing up to escalate the five-year-old war.


-Fire in Old City-


A huge fire broke out early Saturday in the Old City of Damascus, leaving huge losses and damage in one the of Syria's most prominent bazaars, activists told Zaman al-Wasl.

The plumes of Smoke have been seen from different parts in the government-held city.

Head of Regime's Civil Defense Corps said the fire in al-Asrouniya marketplace was due to 'short circuit'. Local activist doubt such a claim, saying the fire was deliberate.
