Refugee volunteers found social center for handicapped in Arsal

(EQTSAD)- Sociologist Abdul Hafiz al-Hulani founded the social support clinic for handicapped to be a social center for the marginalized population in Arsal, Lebanon.

The clinic established in a house in Arsal, a town north-east of Beirut, receives 355 cases of disabilities and does not discriminate against Syrians or locals who already suffered marginalization by their communities.

“The clinic is not a residence; it is more of a social support center. We have daily social activities. The cases we receive at the clinic have paralysis, brain dystrophy, amputation, Down Syndrome, mental disability, and hearing and visual disabilities,”al-Hulani explained.

Al-Hulani said, “the staff consists of myself, a secretary, medical supervisor, cleaner, a social worker, and house owner Umm Omar who donated her house to be a place for the clinic. The car we have is owned by my friend who let us use it for the service of the clinic. Regarding the expenses of the social activities, I donate myself and other friends.”

The social activities at the clinic included a handicraft training workshop in which our clients get trained and qualified to make their own money. The clinic also offers nursing and language courses.

The staff has been training a group of handicapped to present a theatrical work.

According to a report published by Handicap International in 2014, 30 per cent of Syrian refugees have specific needs; one in five refugees is affected by physical, sensory or intellectual impairment; one in seven is affected by chronic disease; and one in20 suffers from injury, with nearly 80 percent of these injuries resulting directly from the Syrian conflict.
