(Zaman Al Wasl)- The first participation of Free Syrian Team in the Open European Championship for Karate ended on Monday with a bronze medal through Olympic champion Ali al-Baroudi after great tournaments.
Al-Baroudi told Zaman al-Wasl, he competed with senior champions and won the tournaments; however, semi-final ended with an even score with the Belgian champion and referents ranked me third with the bronze medal in kata+80 kg. Also, Hasan Qasis was ranked 5th in kata below 80 kg.
In the free weight class, al-Baroudi could not continue the competition due to an injury in the tournament with Spain.
He stressed that the refereeing was not fair to the Free Syrian Team in some instances; however, participating countries praised the Syrian team regardless of lack of experience and preparations.
The Olympic champion concluded the participation in the Open European Championship developed the relation of the Free Syrian Federation for Karate with the European federations which will lead to more participation of the team with upcoming championships.
Syrian sport returned news headlines following the approval of the World Karata Federation on the participation of the Free Syrian Team in the Open European Championships in Luxemburg with a wide participation of international athletes of different age groups.
The Open European Championships for karate was the first official participation for the Free Syrian team after a number of “unofficial” participations, the most important of which was the World Cup held in Athens, the World Shotokan Championship, and the Athens Open Championship for Karate.
The international championship took place between from the 22-24 of April, and Syrian free champions competed in the free weight class, advanced Kata, and Kata for men over the age of 18 with 22 countries.
