Latakia: 50 regime soldiers killed, wounded in clashes with rebels

Translation by Yusra Ahmed

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Heavy clashes erupted on Friday between rebels and regime forces in
Jabal al-Akrad region in the coastal province of Latakia, activists said as regime declared a brief truce in the northern countryside.

Activist Abdul-Rahman Lathqani told Zaman Al Wasl that rebels have killed and injured at least 50 regime soldiers in clashes started in the village of Kabanah in Kurds Mountain which is witnessing clashes between both sides for more than a week.

Lathqani mentioned that clashed started when the regime tried to invade the village, preceded with cannon and mortar shelling, accompanied with air strikes of Russian and Syrian warplanes. However, according to the activist, rebels formations faced the attempt with heavy and medium weapons, causing dozens of deaths and injuries among regime’s militias, and two officers of Sukur al-Sahra were killed.

Liwa Suqur al-Sahara (Desert Hawks Brigade or Desert Falcons) is an armed branch of the Syrian Arab Army fighting with the Syrian regime. It is primarily composed of former military officers and veterans as well as volunteers from other pro-government groups, with an age range of 25 to 40 years. It is considered as an elite group trained in ambush tactics, and has been employed in special assignments on several fronts. The group is equipped with light and medium arms, and is given artillery support from the regular Syrian Arab Army when needed.

Activists mention that Ayman Jaber, a businessman close to regime and to Fawaz al-Assad, the presidents’ cousin, is the one who formed this militia, and it started action in Homs city and participated in Palmyra battle .

After rebels launched an offensive in northern Lattakia province and seized control of the town of Kessab, Suqur al-Sahra was transferred to that front.

-Regime of Calm-

Syrian regime declared Friday brief local truces near Damascus and in Latakia but made no mention of halting combat on the main battlefield in Aleppo, after a surge in fighting the United Nations said showed "monstrous disregard" for civilian lives.

The new "regime of calm", to begin from 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, would last just one day in the capital's eastern Ghouta suburb and three days in the northern countryside of Latakia, the army said in a statement.

Both districts have seen intensified fighting in recent days. The statement made no mention however of the city of Aleppo, scene of the worst violence, which is divided between rebel-held and government areas. An air strike on an Aleppo hospital killed at least 27 people this week.
