Regime forces break into Hama prison as prisoners revolt, activists warn of massacre

Syrian regime forces on Friday broke into Hama central prison after 5 days of revolt, killing at least two inmates, according to inmates, activists and footage posted online by inmates amid deep concerns of an imminent massacre.

Regime troop who have been surrounding the prison since Monday, cutting electricity and water supply, have opened heavy fire in try to break into the jail, a footage showed.

The inmates have protested against the planned transfer of a number of prisoners from Hama to Sednaya military prison north of Damascus. The inmates have seized several guards, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Activists voiced concern over such a breaking in and urged Red Crescent and U.N. to intervene.

In August last year hundreds of inmates at the prison rioted in protest against conditions and harsh sentences.

International rights groups say thousands of detainees are held in Syrian government prisons without charge and many of them are subjected to torture, a claim denied by the authorities.

The Syrian conflict began in 2011 with popular protests against President Bashar al-Assad and spiraled into civil war after a crackdown by security forces. (With Reuters)
