(Eqtsad)- Finding a house to rent has become a difficult job to achieve in the Turkish city of Gaziantep lately, and if found, the cost is too high compared to before, that coincided with troubles on the Syrian-Turkish boarders and heavy displacement movement toward Turkey, and targeting the city of Kilis by the Islamic State’s cross-border missiles since the beginning of this year.
Eqtsad has a tour around estate agencies in Gaziantep which already has a huge Syrian community and high number of refugees. Difficulties in finding an acceptable house to rent was the first to be noticed.
Syrian estate agents attributed the rise in renting cost to two factors: first was the high demand on houses by Syrians who run away from the border town of Keles after it had been targeted by several artillery attacks and shelling. The other reason was the approach of summer season in which the industry sector witnesses increase in activity.
Al-Awael Real Estate Agency rejected the idea blaming them on seizing chances of the recent circumstances to raise the prices estimated by 15% since last year.
Abo Faris, an estate agent, did not see the rise in renting cost was significant as the prices in general has risen in the whole city.
“The prices are already high and do not tolerate more rise, especially with the drop in job opportunity", Abo Faris, the agent said.
Abdullah al-Essa, a Syrian refugee confirmed the increase in the cost of rent in Gaziantep as he was forced to leave the city to Antalya because he was not able to afford for the rent after leaving the town of Kilis where he was living.
Al-Essa wondered why Syrians like Gaziantep despite the high cost of living and lack of job opportunity. He advised that living in Antalya is much better that Gaziantep, where rents are low and there are lots of job opportunity in tourism.
The Turkish military has increased its presence in Kilis, the Turkish southern border city, after being targeted by the Islamic State’s cross-border rocket launched from the territory it controls in northern Syria.
Turkey is planning for additional military measures after suffering almost 50 artillery attacks from the Islamic State-controlled territory in Syria since January this year, killing at least 17 and scores of other wounded in Kilis.
An agreement has been reached with the United States to deploy a missile system in Turkey along the Syrian border across which the Islamic State-held areas are laying out, as part of a strategy to seal off a region around the Syrian town of Manbij.
