Translation by Rana Abdul

(Eqtsad)- The Syrian Assad regime and key ally businessman Mohamed Hamshou are involved in implementing the Iranian scheme to take over Asruniyeh and Bzuriyeh historic markets in the heart of Old City of Damascus, well-informed sources said.

Well-informed sources told Eqtsad that Iranian traders tried via real estate offices in Damascus six months ago to buy the shops in Asruniyeh proposing very high prices but very few shopkeepers responded to the Iranian propositions. Some sold their shops but most of shop owners refused to.

According to the sources, later on Mohamed Hamshou intervened in the efforts to take over al-Asruniyeh. He bought some shops using a mediator name not his real name. owners of big shops refused to sell.

The sources estimate that before the fire 5% of shops were sold.

According to the sources, there are footage taken from cameras in the market which recorded what happened early on Saturday 23 April on the day of eruption of the fire.

The sources pointed out that shops warehouses were full of goods since usually the warehouses are filled on a Thursday with goods in preparation for a new week following the holiday on Friday.

The sources indicated the security checkpoints in the surrounding of main markets in old Damascus does not usually permit anyone to enter following close of the shops in the evening unless with a special security permit.

Some of the cameras in the market recorded exit of trucks filled with goods on Saturday.

Some shops which were exposed to the fire were sold to the Iranians and Hamshou which explains emptying some warehouses from goods on Saturday before eruption of the fire.

Later on around 6:30 in the morning of Saturday the cameras recorded young men wearing a white material standing in front of the doors of the shops. Two hours later the fire started.

According to the sources Mohamed Hamshou proposed to owners of big shops whose shops were greatly damaged by the fire to buy the shops on the top floor since the market has two floors.

Mohamed Hamshou blackmailed the traders who underw
ent great loss to help them in restoration of their shops in exchange of getting the shops in top floor.

Mohamed Hamshou guaranteed he will sponsor the restoration with one Billar SP for getting the top floors.

Al-Bzuriyeh shop owners had similar proposals by traders and real estate offices affiliated with Iran. This led traders of Bzuriyeh to empty their warehouses fearing a similar fire like the one in Asruniyeh.

İt should be noted some of the sources here were pro-regime before the fire but due to the great loss they suffered they are shocked of how big is the conspiracy against Old Damascus.
