Adana Accord allows Turkey to create buffer zone in Syria: National Coalition

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Head of the Syrian National Coalition Anas al-Abdah said on Wednesday that Adana Accord (1998)  between Turkey and Syria is paving the way for Ankara to create a safe zone in Syria.

On the margin of his participation in a conference titled “The recent developments in Syria” in Bilecek in Turkey, al-Abdah said, “in case a safe zone is established, Ankara will be able to secure its borders and Syrians can return safely to their country.”

“At the meantime, it is difficult for the refugees to return because their homes are bombed on daily basis. We hope that Turkish officials would take courageous steps in the establishment of a safe zone because it is very important for both Syria and Turkey. İt will also lessen Ankara’s burdens,” he added.

Al-Abdah pointed out that Turkey is a regional player in the Middle East region and there is no doubt it will play a very important role in rebuilding Syria.

Hafez al-Assad signed a confidential accord with Turkey called Adana Accord on October 20 in 1998. The accord states Assad stops supporting, arming and providing shelter for Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militia.

The accord was a humiliating submission by Hafez al-Assad to Turkish threats which warned the regime of toppling it in case the regime continues to support PKK militia and does not surrender its political leader Abdullan Ocalan.

It has been said that the accord clauses allow Turkish forces incursion on a few kilometers of Syrian soil in a very dangerous and obvious acknowledgment by Hafez al-Assad who accepted Ankara’s dictations back then fearing loss of his power and end of his dream in giving power to his son Bashar.
