(Eqtsad)- A group of enthusiastic youth from Maraba town in the Eastern countryside of Daraa have established a centre for children with special needs supported by the town's local council.
The centre is intended to admit children with speech, hearing and mental disability from the town and surrounding villages.
Ahmed al-Homsi, the manager of the centre confirmed that the centre is a teaching body interested in people with special needs, aims to help them in integration with the community and to activate the local community to interact with their conditions and try to improve their quality of life and their experience with special training by experienced staff.
Al-Homsi detailed: “the centre has started with modest support and capacity, but it was launched to cover the need for services for the relatively high number of people with disabilities, many of them hereditary main resulted from marriage among close relatives, and other disabilities resulted from the war conditions, stress and injuries those children went through."
Al-homsi explained that the centre was opened with support the local council and other private activities in the town, but it still in need for more support to expand its activities. He appealed for all bodies who able to support to stand by the project, as it is the first one at the province level specialised in people with special needs.
The manager said that the centre is called “ the centre of special education for hearing, speech and mental disabilities”, which accepts children aged between 5 years and 12 years. He detailed that the number of children reached to 30 and it is planning to admit children of special need from surrounding towns as well as Maraba’s children, moreover, it plans to be suitable for more the disabled from other age groups.
Al-Homsi talked about the near future plans of the centre: “we are planning to open new rehabilitation sessions for those with hearing and speech disabilities in Summer and we are going to admit new cases of disabled children, we are going to do general tests and hearing test to diagnose the medical conditions with help of the field hospital and other medical staff in the region, in order to reach to find way to improve hearing and help in speech difficulties for suitable cases.
Parents are very happy with the centre as they find some support and help in rehabilitating their handicaped children, especially with experts supervision.
Abul-Latif al-Faleh and Ahmed Radi are parents of two disabled children with mental and speech handicap, they are very happy with the staff effort in teaching their children basics of pronunciations, reading and writing, for free, beside the emotional support.
Sources from the local council confirmed the launch of the centre and its activities, praising the effort of the staff and confirmed that they have as support as possible to continuo in such activity.
There was many centres for rehabilitation of children with special needs before the revolution in the province of Daraa, but all of them were closed as a result of the war and forced displacement, which led to neglecting the disabled and their needs.
