Regime crossed 'red line' after increasing bread price, loyalists voiced anger

 Translation by Yusra Ahmed

(Eqtsad)- Bread is no longer the untouchable red line, as the Syrian regime has broken its promises to keep the price of bread affordable for all people, but now bread price has almost doubled accompanied with reducing production.

The price of a bag of bread has increased from 15 S.P to 25 S.P, thus it has jointed the list of unprotected goods.

In latest days, worries and stress has increased among Syrians, but this time was because they started to sense more pressure on the most essential ingredient of their and their children’s food. In the same time, even the regime’s loyalists have nothing to say to justify the regime’s decision to reduce the support on breads and for the auxiliary bakeries.

Bakeries in Damascus ad countryside have witnessed heavy and long queues of desperate people worrying that they might not have a chance to get few loaves of bread. Many brawls took place among people while waiting in front of bakeries.

“Queues the whole day long” was the most suitable expression to describe situation of bread crisis in the capital of Damascus, even the bakery specialist in making bread for diabetic patient in Fahama neighborhood in Damascus has witnessed unusual demand as people cannot find another alternative.

The auxiliary bakeries are not able to cover people’s needs after reducing the production capacity and working hours.

The auxiliary bakery in Mezzeh has witnessed long crowded queues at all selling windows.

A loyalist journalist wrote on his facebook page that the scene around bakeries has been frightening in the last 4 days, as Ibn al-Amid bakery serving the north and east of Damascus was extremely crowded and the same applied to bakeries in the countryside, such as Sehnaya where dozens of thousands of displaced and local people pile up waiting for bread.

The journalist angrily wondered for the aim of that test of people's ability to tolerate more pain and humiliation and for how long it is going to last.

Taking off the governmental support of bread and raising its price, has stripped the regime and made its most supporters and defender helpless in finding in way to justify that humiliating act against already over-stretched people.

The Syrian regime’s Ministry of Trade and Protecting Consumers had Last Thursday issued a statement to the auxiliary bakeries ordering them to reduce the production capacity (from 14 tonnes to almost 10 tonnes) and reducing the working hours from 22 hours to 16. Therefore such a crisis for getting bread was anticipated, and it happened quicker than expected.
