(Zaman Al Wasl)- A Syrian refugee who recently converted to Christianity in Sweden has committed suicide on Tuesday in a refugee camp in the southern city of Mörbylanga, activist said.
Hazem Dakel, media activist told Zaman al-Wasl that Mohamed Sheikha’s suicide followed his family and friends scolded him after he made the decision to change his faith and converting to Christianity.
According to Dakel, Sheikha received promises and confirmations from the church of financial and moral support, but those close to him confirmed that no such thing happened, and they suggested that his suicide may have been the result of unfulfilled promises and the state of frustration he felt.
Activists in the Swedish church and the Swedish Migration Board demanded clarifications of the truth of the incident and that decisions should be taken to protect refugees from religious or party activities that are performed inside the refugee camps and transit centers.
They also demanded that refugee residence permits should be given quicker due to the effects the delayed processes have on the mental and moral state of thousands of refugees.
