(Zaman Al Wasl)- A campaign to help and support refugees has been launched in Germany in the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan. One of the pictures presented a homeless child with a caption said “Zakat means helping the weak,” which reflects the presence of the Islam in the German community, the country that welcomed thousands of Syrian refugees since the beginning of the Syrian crisis.
In the beginning of Ramadan, the relief and support institutions start taking care of refugees and their conditions, and try to help them in refugee centres as the main kitchen provides the Iftar meal, other Islamic organisations provide dates for fasting people, while campaigns to collect Zakat for refugees and the needy outside Germany in Lebanon, Syria and Turkey increase their activities.
An activist talked to Zaman Al Wasl on condition of anonymity said: “Germans respect the Muslims’ fasting a lot, but they are surprise of the reason behind tolerating long time, almost 17 hours, without food or drink.
Refugees who are outside camps in Germany pray “Tarawih” pray, 20 rakahs, as group in the Islamic centres in big cities or the Turks’ mosques, while women pray at home.
The activists mentioned that malls have allocated some shelves for Ramadan food like date, Qamar-Eddin and juice. But according to the activist that interest in Ramadan has been for a long time before the refugees arrival to Germany, as Turks have been in the country for long time.
The activist mentioned that the German government has exempted the Islamic shops and restaurants from tax to help them in keeping the prices low.
Federal Foreign Minister Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier has congratulate the Muslims for Ramadan and said via a statement distributed by the German media centre in Cairo Monday saying: “I wish happy peaceful Ramadan to all Muslims and with the family.”
He continues that Ramadan is time for Muslims for meditation. He wished that the month would be a sign of hope, peace, respect and forgiving especially within the recent crises and conflicts in the Islamic countries.
