Syrian refugees in Bulgaria practicing Ramadan rites despite misery

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Living conditions of Syrian refugees in Bulgaria are not different from other refuge countries, especially in the holy month of Ramadan.

Despite the hard conditions refugees live through and tightening of Bulgarian authorities, refugees are trying to summon the Ramadan
atmosphere as they have experienced in their countries. They distribute their time between fasting, worshiping and entertainment to pass the relative long fasting time stretching for 17 hours and 27 mins approximately.

Although there is obvious decrease in the entrance of Syrian refugees due to tightened border control with Turkey especially after seal of Serbia road. Many Syrian refugees in Bulgaria live in Camps. Currently, there are 4 open centers to receive refugees; 2 of them are near Turkish borders, 2 in Sofia, and Banya camp to receive minors.


With the start of Ramadan month every year, Ramadan specialty enters these camps. Some Islamic organization distribute Iftar meals sponsored by Arab businessmen. However, any activity inside the camp has to be approved by the authorities. That’s why many organizations prefer to distribute meals in front of the camps or in there offices in the city.

Director of Syrian Association for Refugee Rights Mohamed Ali said, “most of the fasting refugees come to the mosques to attended Iftar and Tarawih prayers. There are two mosques in the capital Sofia in which two meals are offered daily in Banya Bashe Mosque in addition to collective meals done by Muslim religious directorate in Bulgaria.”

The Syrian Association for Refugee Rights directs refugees to these organization and directs funders and people who want to help and join them sometime during distribution time in Ramadan, Ali confirmed.

Ali added the percentage of Syrian refugees last year is more than this year since most of them have left to Germany and Sweden. Also, there is a significant number of refugees who keep fasting.

Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev have made an Iftar banquet celebrating Ramadan for the third year in a row. The Presidential Media Office in Sofia clarified that President Plevneliev hosting of the banquet is to honor this holy month and in respect to Bulgarian Muslims. Bulgarian Official TV had broadcasted a speech for the Grand Mufti of Bulgaria Sheikh Mustafa Hadji Aleesh in honor of Ramadan. (Reporting by Faris al-Rifai; Translation by Rana Abdul)
