Translation by Yusra Ahmed

(Eqtsad)- Exporting olive oil to Gulf Countries and Europe led to doubling its price 100% within 3 months.

Eqtsad correspondent in Homs reported that the price of one 16-litre-can of olive oil is sold in the north countryside of Homs for SYP (20-25) thousand, while it was only SYP 13 thousand three months ago.

Abo Mustafa, an agriculture engineer and expert in oil manufacturing told Eqtsad that resuming exporting olive oil to Gulf countries and Europe led to increase its price, mentioning that he was preparing 300 tonnes to export to Saudi Arabia.

In a phone call with an Agricultural Engineer in Damascus said that on can of olive oil is sold in Damascus for SYP (22-25) thousand, but the turnout is low because 70% of people cannot afford the cost.

In the West countryside of Hama, the main producer of olive oil, the cost of one can reached to SYP 18 thousand.

According to Abo Mustafa, expert of manufacturing oil, the production of olive oil last year estimated by 150 thousand tonnes, half the amount is consumed inside Syria, while the rest is either exported of smuggled to neighbouring countries.

On the other hand, farmers in Homs countryside reported to Eqtsad that olive trees have been affected with frost wave in the time of flowering in April/May, which could drop the harvest by 30%, in other word, no more than 50 tonnes.

The price of one 16-litre-can of olive oil in 2011, the year of Syrian revolution, was SYP 2500-3000, and its price these days is normal, because most products have increased almost 10 folds.
