Translation by Yusra Ahmed
(Zaman Al Wasl)- Obaid, a Christian man announced his adoption to Islam in the beginning of the Syrian revolution, to share people in his village of Qusayr, the trip of suffering which has started with losing everything, then displacement ending up as a refugee in Lebanon.
Obaid, 35, has changed his name into Ahmed after applying to the Shariah court to change his religion from Christianity into Islam. He was impressed with Islam rules and worship from his friends and neighbours in Qusayr in the countryside of Homs.
Obaid’s “Ahmed” choice was not respected and was punished for it, as he was targeted by the security forces for his attitude and support to the revolution. “I was harassed by the Church’s congregation and my wife was taken away from me and my two kids, Faris and Fadi, were abducted”, Ahmed told Zaman al-Wasl.
In his tent in a camp in Lebanon, Ahmed suffers of poverty, hunger and deprivation, with his two wives. They have not had any child yet.
Ahmed’s only source of income is money he earns from selling corncobs, but in Ramadan selling decreased causing some financial hardship for him and his two wives.
Ahmed told Zaman al-Wasl that he wished to be able to afford for a gas cylinder to be able to cook Iftar food.
Ahmed wondered: “Islam is about sharing and cooperation, how can someone sleep while his neighbour is hungry, I wish that we all feel others’ pain and need, I pray to God to help the Syrian people who were displace and left their house and suffering need and deprivation
