(Zaman Al Wasl)- A military source disclaimed circulated news in the media about Russia establishing a new military base in Palmyra airport following recapture of archeological city from Islamic State.
The source told Zaman al-Wasl the rumors are incorrect confirming the Russians established a small military barrack for engineering and demining force in one of the touristic building near the ancient city.
The Palmyra airport has become a military base for regime forced led by the notorious Colonel Suhail al-Hassan. One of the fortified buildings was chosen as leadership headquarters in addition to ground troops spread in airport to guard it as well as personal guards of the colonel to accompany him in the surrounding of Palmyra.
The airport is considered now a base to prepare and mobilize al-Hassan troops to any area in surrounding of Palmyra city.
There are two Gazelle helicopters allocated for al-Hassan in the airport and two crews of pilots for each helicopter and technical crews to prepare the helicopters to launch, the source added.
According to the source, the airport includes a technical team to receive more regime helicopters of mi-17 and mi-25 types indicating the landing strip and runways have been restored to receive any civil or military aircraft.
