Hasaka: Asayish seizes Syriac migrants’ houses, Church intervene

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Asayish forces, key unit in the the Democratic Union Party (PYD), tried to seize number of houses belong to immigrants of Syriac in the city centre of Hasaka.

Activist "Mahmoud al-Ahmad" said Asayish  had occupied some of the closed houses belong to Syriac families left the country in Fardous street yesterday after breaking doors, then they placed three of them in each house. He added neighbours in the street tried to stop them but no avail.

The activist said that the Bishop of the Syriac Orthodox Church has intervened to mediate with PYD militants to vacate the house. Houses were known to be belonged to Shamon Amousi and the jeweller Abu Jack.

Syriac sources from the city of Hasaka have confirmed to Zaman Al Wasl that militias of the Democratic Union Party tried to seize these houses, pointing to the intervention of the church to be regain them.

This act came a day after tensions between the regime’s forces and militants of PYD in Hasaka city centre followed by abduction of members of the regime forces by armed groups belong to PYD.

The same sources reported that shopkeepers have closed their shops in the main market especially in Palestine Street amid fears among civilians of renewing clashes between the two sides in the city, pointing out to mobilizing elements of regime group of Hagana to the Streets of Grand Mosque and Palestine in addition to nearby areas especially the al-Hal old market, while Asayish militia mobilized their elements in the opposite side.

In May 2016, PYD seized many buildings and identified them as municipal property, in order to protect them.

Asayish militias have on February 2016 captured 13 homes in the neighbourhoods of Siyaha and Gharbi in Qamishli city to the North of Hasaka under a pretext of the absence of their owners and implementing the law of management and protection of migrants and absentee property, which incited people and relatives of migrant homeowners. .

Hakam Khalo, Head of the high legislation Council in the Kurdish administration in Northern Hasaka said after issuing the decision in November 2015: "in regard to the properties of Syriac Chaldo-Assyrian and Yezidi people and other ethnic groups, a committees from these components will be formed to manage and protect these properties."

PYD announced at the beginning of 2014 formation of self administration in North Syria to manage areas under his control, with its institutions and own laws. In November 2015, it issued a law for “protection and management of the properties of absentees and migrants” and formed committees to count houses and property left behind after leaving their owners abroad.
