(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian regime loyalists adopted a call for a set-in in front of parliament protesting increase of fuel prices whereas media networks called to hold government accountable and cancel its decision considering it illegal which was denied by regime chairman of Bar Association.
Bayt Yashout page posted, “we will do a set-in in front of the parliament in protest to government decision of increasing fuel prices which will lead to a whole increase of consumption products. The sit-in will be at 11 a.m. on Sunday.”
-Sit-in and evasion-
The page said the set-in will not be under any party or slogan. It is for any Syrian citizen who is affected by this dreadful increase of prices and the unjust decisions by the government in the right of all Syrians. We hope our voices will be heard. The page called for the set-in to raise the homeland flag.
The Assad government has increased fuel prices by 35%. A liter of diesel became 180 SP and a liter of gasoline became 225 SP. Also, the price of a cylinder of gas increased to reach 2500 SP.
The call for a set-in was welcomed on social media; however, the PM Aref al-Taweel evaded the set-in who was accused of launching.
Al-Taweel said on his personal page, “I did not call for neither a sedition nor chaos. Also, I did not call anyone to participate in a set-in in front of the parliament. Any type of gathering or activity has to be within the framework of Syrian laws. I am not with chaos which serves the enemy not the friend.”
The accusation that al-Taweel launched the idea of the set-in was because he posted on his page indicating a government that facilitates the country’s functioning does not have the right to issue new resolutions. The government has to execute and facilitate implementation of its old resolutions. He called for an appeal to the decision of increasing fuel prices during the parliament session next Sunday.
-The decision is legal-
After many demanded the cancellation of the government decision considering it illegal, the regime’s Chairman of Bar Association Nizar Skeef responded saying the decision to increase prices of petroleum products issued by Ministry of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection is a constitutional decision in the absolute sense and correct legally speaking. He clarified the government has the authorities to issue decisions in the fields granted by the constitution in article 128 even if the government was resigning or if the government was only running to facilitate functioning. The government has all authorities until new ministers perform their constitutional oath.
Skeef denied that parliament has the authority to appeal the administrative decision according to article 75 of the constitution. He indicated that constitutional court has the authority to perform an appeal and not the parliament.
-Immediate reactions-
In a field observation to the reactions on the decision on the markets in the Syrian coast, Latakia Media Network correspondent Mohamed al-Sahili stated public transport drivers in Latakia city increased the transportation fee by 50% immediately after the decision was released. The Taxi drivers refused to turn on the meter in their cars and they take fees as they wish in addition to a varied increase to most of consumer goods.
The escalation by people to the decision of the government seemed uncounted for, the Coast News Network threatened not to be silent regarding the decision saying only an ISIS government would release such a decision. The network seemed indifferent to possible consequences of threatening the government, the network posted, “we are waiting to be dragged to prisons, and we are only afraid of God.”
Observers see the objections on the government decisions would not have been possible be it not for the Syrian revolution which taught some rebellion principles to Assad’s supporters even though they declared they are still far from joining the revolution ranks. (Translation by Rana Abdul)
