60,000 Syrian refugees stranded after Jordan border closure: activists

(Zaman Al Wasl)- More than 60,000 Syrian refugees in Rukban camp have been stranded as Jordan closed the border with Syria after suicide attack on Tuesday.

Activists and local rebel councils
in the eastern countryside of Homs have called on the Kingdom to take refugees severe situation into consideration despite cowered attack.

The International relief workers have also warned that Jordan's suspension of all humanitarian aid to the area could put the lives of refugees at risk.

Jordan has declared its border regions with Syria and Iraq to be closed military zones after a suicide bombing on Tuesday that killed six soldiers.

Rukban camp is the last crossing where refugees fleeing violence in Syria and Iraq can gain entry to Jordan. It is not clear who was behind the attack, which was launched from Syrian territory, close to a refugee camp.

Tens of thousands are currently stranded in this remote area of the desert, and depend on daily deliveries from the Jordanian side to survive, according to BBC.

The Jordanian government said no new refugee camps would be built and none would be expanded.

Tuesday's attack, the first of its kind since the conflict in Syria began in 2011, saw a lorry full of explosives driven at high speed over the border from Syria and blown up beside a Jordanian military post.

Jordan is one of the biggest hosts of Syrians displaced by conflict, currently home to more than 600,000 refugees registered with the UN. (With BBC)
