Russian troops to protect gas fields in eastern Homs: sources

Well-informed sources in Badiyat Homs reported to Zaman Al Wasl that Russian soldiers have been instructed to protect lines of gas and other gas wells in the desert of Homs and Palmyra instead of the Brigade of Bostan Association supported by Rami Makhlouf, Bashar al-Assad’s cousin, and the national defense in the area between gas refineries in the town of Forukus, and gas fields of al-Shaer, area of T4 military airport.

The source mentioned that members of Bostan militias who were living in regime-loyal areas in Homs like Zahra, Arman, Wadi al-dahab and many villages in the Eastern countryside of Homs, are now in Damascus after withdrawal from the desert of Homs.

According to information obtained by Zaman Al Wasl, the monthly salary for a volunteer in Bostan brigade is SYP 50 thousand and the administrative headquarter is in the airport of Shaerat to the East South of Homs, headed by Colonel Shaban al-Ojah from the city of Sankari who was killed at the boarder of the city of Palmyra three months ago. A new officer was appointed from the family of Joma from the city of Makhram Fokani in the Eastern countryside of Homs.

A former engineer in a “Gas Forloks” refinery confirmed to Zaman Al Wasl that he expected that Russian forces would take over the task of protecting the biggest oil and gas investment in the desert of Homs and Palmyra. He added that the main goal of the military base in the archaeological area in Palmyra was stealing monuments and smuggling them to Israel and protecting the gas field and refineries and maintaining then to resume working again, and they were successful in the areas between Forloks, Shaer, Hajjar and Faid Shamali.

The former employee confirmed that Russian factories in Homs's Desert used in 2011 to produce more than 60% of Syrian production of clean gas estimated to have been 22 million cubic meter per day.

The employee mentioned that Russian companies have contracted with the regime a year before the Syrian revolution to build a new refinery for Gas and invest it near Palmyra
