ISIS executes 5 Syrian journalists, uses Horror Propaganda

Writing by Ethar Abdul Haq; Translation by Rana Abdul

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The Islamic State has entrenched its feet in the tracks of crime and brutality when it mixed killing methods it is known for with other exceptional methods included in its new footage titled, “Devil’s Inspiration” published by the ISIS branch in Deir ez-Zor which it calls, the province of good.

The footage focused on the execution, using extremely savage methods, of a group of young men working in the media sector inside Deir ez-Zor province with the aim of terrorizing any person thinking of covering the news in ISIS controlled areas.

At the start of the video, one of the people appeared with his camera hanging from his neck, he was tied to a metal fence which shows him to be suspended. The voice over spoke about him using a few short phrases in English directed at the American intelligence services and those who cooperate with it, and continued, “the Islamic State has it owns security intelligence from supporters of Allah which cannot be breached.”

The footage 15 minutes in length, pointed to what was called the media war in the framework between right and wrong, then the first picture showed was for the engineer Samer Mohammad al-Aboud, a 33-year-old son of the city of Deir ez-Zor, according to what was said about him.

Al-Aboud said that he was working as an office manager of the Developmental Interactive Network, and that he covered news about military battles, other than covering news about people’s situations in Deir ez-Zor area, including following the prices of products sold.

Al-Aboud clarified that he was also interested in covering news about al-Mouhajirin (migrants), non-Syrian fighters, to document what countries they came from and the extent of their integration in society, etc.

The producers of the video insisted on forcing al-Aboud to enter into a role playing scene embodying every phrase he said, from his tours in the markets to his earning a monthly salary of 200 $, to his engagement with ISIS members and speaking to them.
The young man considered that the devil was whispering to him and tempting him, reassuring him that ISIS will not discover him and arrest him, for the camera to later capture the moment al-Aboud was slaughtered with a very sharp knife after which he fell covered with his own blood.

In a similar approach of al-Aboud’s confessions accompanying the scenes, the young man Sami Joudet Rabah exited to introduce himself as an independent media worker whose job was to “transfer the truth to people without additions or reductions.”
After several months of his work, Rabah said that someone asked him for information about the military and civilian situation in the city of Deir ez-Zor, he also identified locations belonging to ISIS in the city in return for 300 $ a month. Regarding the files within the information about the military and civilian situation, the agreement was for him to be paid 500 $ for each file.

In the conclusion of his appearance, the youth directed a message to spies saying, “you are not fighting the Islamic State, you are fighting Allah and his Prophet,” for that to be his last recorded words before the laptop he was working on was bobby trapped, his head tapped to it and the explosives detonated. He was blown up inside his house where his blood splattered and covered the walls and furniture in the place.

Mahmoud Shaban al-Haj Khadir appeared standing up with the support of two crutches, identifying himself as the person responsible for the radio channel Al-An (Now) in Deir ez-Zor.

Al-Haj Khadir said he placed the transmission device in an empty house, and he was paid a monthly salary equivalent to 100 thousand Syrian Pounds, and that he used to check on the device every two or three days, and when he came to check on it one time he was caught by members of ISIS.

The footage documents the moment of al-Haj Khadir’s execution using a metal chain which was place on his neck and forcefully pulled back while he was standing and handcuffed to a metal door. The pulling continued until the man caught his last breaths and chocked.

It then came time for the fourth victim, the son of Deir ez-Zor Mohammed Marwan al-Issa who had he was providing his brother who works for al-Jazeera net with news (social, economic) about the situation in the ISIS-controlled area.

The release documented the moment al-Issa was slaughtered while he was chained to a chair, using a close up lens to capture the moment his neck was cut and the blood flowed from it.

In the footage, ISIS threatened media workers who are working against it of sharing the same fate of their colleagues at ISIS’s hands, slaughter or death by bullet, repeating the confession of slaughtering two members of al-Raqqah is being Slaughtered Silently campaign, and killing Zahir al-Shurqat with “a bullet to the head” according to the expression used in the release.

ISIS continued directing its words to media workers opposed to it, “there is no dignity, no consolation, and do not think that your presence in Europe will protect you… as for those who toured inside Paris and Brussels it will not be difficult for them to pluck the head of the unclean where ever it is.”

ISIS concluded the series of brutal executions by showing the photographer Mustafa Haset from the city of Deir ez-Zor who worked as an independent media worker at the start before Human Rights’ Watch got in touch with him for him to provide them with information and images from ISIS controlled areas.

The footage showed the moment the camera Mustafa used was bobby trapped with explosives and it was hung on his chest while he was tied with metal chains on the balcony rail in his house before the camera was detonated tearing his body into pieces.

Zaman al-Wasl severely condemns this rooted criminality in ISIS against media workers. It offers it condolences to their families and the parties they worked for, and it repeats it determination to continue documenting and revealing the various crimes committed on Syrian soil regardless of the perpetrator.
