Turkey may rise wages of Syrian teachers in refugee camps: syndicate

(Eqtsad)-  Head of the Syrian teachers’ syndicate said it is probable for Syrian teachers in Turkey to witness an increase in their salaries.

In a special conversation with Eqtsad,
Hasan Tayfour indicated to a preliminary agreement that has been reached between UNICEF and the Turkish authorities with the aim of improving the salaries of Syrian teachers in Turkey.

Tayfour, a member in the quadruple committee tasked with following the affairs of Syrian refugees in Turkey, revealed the details of a delegate meeting with Mr Ercan Demirci, the advisor to the Turkish minister of education and the official responsible for the Syrian file, that took place on Friday in Ankara. He indicated the bundle of demands that touches Syrian refugees’ lives and which the delegation reported to the Turkish official and at its head education.

Tayfour said, “we explained to the Turkish side the problems that are facing the teaching process and of them the most significant is the weakness of teachers’ salaries, the decision processes in the temporary educational centers, counterfeiting of certificates, and other issues.” He added, “we felt a tangible response from the Turkish side, and we received promises that our demands are on their way into practice.”

Regarding increasing teachers’ salaries, the teachers’ representative clarified, “the cost of life in Turkey is expensive, it has pushed my teachers to leave the profession, and in the process they made room for others who hold counterfeit certificates, so we said the Turkish officials that a monthly salary set at 900 Turkish Lira is not enough to satisfy the needs of a family.”

Quoting Demirci, Tayfour said, “Syrian teachers’ salaries will become the equivalent of the salaries earned by Turks following the EU dedicating large sums of money to support education in Turkey.”

He extrapolated, “these increases will be of a kind and other than the increase there are new decisions that will frame the educational process with laws and this will lead to an end of random decisions to fire or hire educations other than workshops and training sessions will be held to equip teachers.”

About the issue of counterfeit certificates, Tayfour did not reveal the details of the trial project that the teachers syndicate is conducting at the level of two provinces Urfa and Gaziantep, but he indicated that in the event of this ordering project working it will present a significant leap for the education file, and it will be transferred to all Turkish cities and provinces where there is a registered Syrian presence.
